If you were..."

“many adults in the United States have ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder? If you were like most psychiatrists and doctors in the year 1990, you’d have answered, “almost none. The condition is typically characterized by hyperactivity, which most adults don’t have. And even without hyperactivity, just ADD, there simply isn’t that much of it in adults.” They were horribly wrong. According to the World Health Organization and many other respected medical authorities, about 5% of adults in the United States have ADHD.That’s 11,000,000 people. Because we didn’t believe ADHD existed in adults, not very many are getting treatment. Of those eleven million, in the past year, only one million got some form of treatment for ADHD. This is a gigantic public health failure. Untreated ADHD causes real problems. Having it means you’re twice as likely to get a divorce. You have an up to 50% chance of developing serious depression or anxiety. You’re more likely to get your license suspended or revoked.3 All this – and you would have had no idea why. Why it was so hard for you to pay attention to small details, to sit still, to stay focused on one thing. To enjoy a long conversation or stay at the dinner table after eating. Those and more than 90 other areas can be extremely challenging for people with ADHD.”

- Gurevich, David (2010-05-24).

Looks like the apparent explosion of ADHD might actually be growing proportion of sleep disorders among children, instead.

Kate Murphy via NYTimes.com

Diagnoses of attention hyperactivity disorder among children have increased dramatically in recent years, rising 22 percent from 2003 to 2007, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But many experts believe that this may not be the epidemic it appears to be.

Many children are given a diagnosis of A.D.H.D., researchers say, when in fact they have another problem: a sleep disorder, like sleep apnea. The confusion may account for a significant number of A.D.H.D. cases in children, and the drugs used to treat them may only be exacerbating the problem.

“No one is saying A.D.H.D. does not exist, but there’s a strong feeling now that we need to rule out sleep issues first,” said Dr. Merrill Wise, a pediatric neurologist and sleep medicine specialist at the Methodist Healthcare Sleep Disorders Center in Memphis.

The symptoms of sleep deprivation in children resemble those of A.D.H.D. While adults experience sleep deprivation as drowsiness and sluggishness, sleepless children often become wired, moody and obstinate; they may have trouble focusing, sitting still and getting along with peers.

The latest study suggesting a link between inadequate sleep and A.D.H.D. symptoms appeared last month in the journal Pediatrics. Researchers followed 11,000 British children for six years, starting when they were 6 months old. The children whose sleep was affected by breathing problems like snoring, mouth breathing or apnea were 40 percent to 100 percent more likely than normal breathers to develop behavioral problems resembling A.D.H.D.

[…]

Indeed, sleep experts note that children who lose as little as half an hour of needed sleep per night — whether because of a sleep disorder or just staying up too late texting or playing video games — can exhibit behaviors typical of A.D.H.D.

Kids need their sleep, and — unmentioned in this article — modern school starts way too early in the AM for many children.

Maintaining friendships is hard work for most adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). It means making commitments and following through, neither of which are big strengths of ours. If we wind up canceling or, worse, forgetting about a coffee date or movie night altogether, we feel guilty, frustrated, and worse than if we hadn’t agreed to meet.

Piles, which may seem innocuous to someone who doesn’t have ADD, can become the stuff of nightmares in life with ADD. They take on angulated, monstrous proportions, and leave the ADD adult feeling defeated, dispirited, and inept. Of all the problems I help adults with ADD to overcome, this one, which sounds insignificant and even funny, can be one of the worst. So, take it seriously.”

- Ratey Md, John J.; Hallowell, Edward M. Md (2005-12-27). Delivered from Distraction (p. 291). Random House, Inc..
